The folks down in Berkley California have taken recycling, reusing and resource recovery to a whole new level. Urban Ore's purpose was set in the 1990's by founder Dan Knapp and Board members Mary Lou Van Deventer and Michael Casady. That purpose, To End The Age of Waste, is now printed on every receipt that Urban Ore writes for its thousands of customers to carry home with them. At a Zero Waste conference in the fall of 2010 in Florianopolis Brazil, I met Pal who offered a new look at the way Gothenburgers treat their discarded materials at the many Resource Recovery Centers and Parks. Accepting the traditional recyclables, Pal and his colleagues have created an entirely different drop off depot that hosts musicians strumming on guitars, fabulous eateries, amusement parks and retail outlets to name a few things they have going on there. Gothenburg has taken solid waste management from managing garbage to recovering resources by managing the discards streams differently.
